Background

The United Nations (UN) General Assembly Resolution A/66/296 directs the President of the General Assembly (PGA) to organize, no later than June 2014, an informal interactive hearing with representatives of indigenous peoples and representatives of entities of the UN system, academic institutions, national human rights institutions, parliamentarians, civil society and non-governmental organizations, in accordance with the relevant provisions of the present resolution, to provide valuable input into the preparatory process for the high level plenary meeting of the General Assembly to be known as the World Conference on Indigenous Peoples.

Meeting details

On 30 May 2014, the PGA announced that the informal interactive hearing will be held Tuesday, 17 June and Wednesday, 18 June, 2014, at the UN Headquarters in New York. The specific venue and time has not been announced.

The informal interactive hearing is open to representatives of indigenous peoples and representatives of entities of the UN system, academic institutions, national human rights institutions, parliamentarians, civil society and non-governmental organizations.
