The Global Preparatory Process
To prepare, Indigenous peoples worldwide have been meeting by region and caucus to identify issues of concern and discuss strategies important in that region to realizing indigenous rights, including those outlined in the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
These ideas have been collected into regional and caucus declarations. Each declaration encapsulates issues, strategies and recommendations from the perspective of the Indigenous peoples of that region or caucus. The declarations are being carried forth to the Global Indigenous Preparatory Conference to be held June 10 – 12, 2014 in Alta, Norway. Each region has 57 delegates that will be attending and criteria and selection of delegates is being done at the regional level. It is expected that over 800 Indigenous peoples, observers, and members of the press and media will attend.
Together, these declarations and ultimately the outcome document from the Indigenous Global Preparatory Meeting inform themes to be discussed at the HLP/WCIP and describe a global common platform for Indigenous peoples.
